The Internet is Breeding Passive Support
With the extenuating circumstances that the students at Mizzou are facing, there has been a surge of support from the online community. “ To the students of color at Mizzou, we, student allies at Bard High School Early College, stand with you in solidarity. To those who threaten your sense of safety, we are watching” has been an incredibly popular quote on facebook and #concernedstudent1950 and #insolidaritywithMizzou have been trending hashtags on twitter and Instagram. However, even through all the online support, little is being done.

In the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, there was real effort put into trying to achieve justice. People raised money, protested in the street, and really raised awareness for the underlying problems in the two incidents. This is not the case for the students at Mizzou. Although many have posted, very few have actually stood with the students. They have quickly faded from the public eye and now barely anything is seen. Perhaps with the dean’s resignation a problem was cut short, but the huge racist roots it had are still at large.
