The Most-Anticipated K-Dramas of 2024
There’s some seriously good casting ahead!
With the memorable K-dramas of 2023 now behind us, it’s time to look forward to the eagerly-anticipated K-dramas due to air in 2024. I for one cannot wait to squeal, laugh and swoon my way through this year’s viewing. Seriously, looking at the 2024 line-up, it’s like the K-drama gods have taken all my favourite actors and brought them together — in some new pairings and some I know and love already (Kim Woo-bin and Bae Suzy I’m looking at you — please don’t break my heart this time though, okay?). So I’m already bouncing in my seat with excitement. Here’s just a few of the many K-drama premieres I’m looking forward to this year.
Marry My Husband (1 January 2024)
That’s right — Marry My Husband has already started airing! This is Park Min-young’s latest drama and I can say hand on heart this is worth watching. She plays Ji-won, who (to put it lightly) is having a really rough time. She’s sick, literally on her deathbed, when she finds out her husband is cheating on her with her best friend. Her husband kills her to make good on an insurance fraud scheme he’s cooked up with his lover. But then, ahem, Ji-won wakes up and she’s gone back in time 10 years! And she is READY to give her life an extreme makeover, prevent her untimely death, and enjoy a little spot of revenge, too.
It starts off rather grim, but gathers speed (and … fun!) very quickly, with very entertaining results. There’s also a very, very charming potential love interest (in the form of Na In-woo) to make things even more interesting.
At the time of writing, we’re only two incredible episodes in, so get yourself on the couch and let’s go!
Marry My Husband airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on tvN in South Korea, and on Amazon Prime Video in selected regions.
Doctor Slump (27 January 2024)
Later this month, Doctor Slump will premiere on JTBC in South Korea, and Netflix the following day for other regions and I am very excited about the casting of this one. It’s set to star Park Hyung-sik — who I have a real soft spot for since he was the lead in the first K-drama I ever watched (Strong Girl Do Bong-soon) —and Park Shin-hye, who I also love!
From what I’ve been able to gather, they’re former high-school-rivals-turned-doctors-turned … well, looks like they both quit their jobs, and are thrown back into each other’s lives at a really low point for the both of them. It’s written by the same screenwriter as What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim? which is another point in its favour in my opinion!
Queen of Tears (March 2024)
Speaking of screenwriters with a knack for writing hit K-dramas, Queen of Tears, scheduled to air on tvN in March, is written by Park Ji-eun who brought us My Love from the Star and Crash Landing on You (which just so happens to be my number 1, all-time favourite K-drama). So my expectations are high! And the casting looks excellent — bringing together Kim Soo-hyun, who I loved in My Love from the Star and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, and Kim Ji-won who I became a fan of when I watched Fight for My Way and Descendants of the Sun. I am really looking forward to seeing what their chemistry is like together.
The funny thing about K-dramas is, before they air, the synopses are vague AF, so all I’ve been able to find out about this one is that Kim Soo-hyun’s character is from a small town and worked his way up to being legal director at a huge conglomerate, Queens Group. And he’s married to the chaebol heiress of said conglomerate. They face some sort of marriage crisis — and that’s the extent of the information available! Nevertheless, I’m sure this will be one to watch!
Because I Want No Loss (TBC)
Now if there’s a trope I love, no questions asked, it’s a fake marriage trope! And that’s what we’re in for with tvN’s Because I Want No Loss. Shin Min-ah is Ha-young, who needs to get married in order to secure a promotion at work. She proposes a fake marriage to the guy who works at her local convenience store (!), Ji-wook — played by Kim Young-dae. Seems completely outrageous and so naturally, I can’t wait! It’s the stuff romcom dreams are made of and I’m here for it.
Everything Will Come True (TBC)
Oh. My. Goodness. Hands up if you’ve bawled your way through Uncontrollably Fond (2016)? My hand is up. And keep your hand up if, despite the utter devastation that K-drama is responsible for, you thought Kim Woo-bin and Bae Suzy were THE COUPLE. My hand is still up. You, too? Then, you’re probably all over this news already: 2024 sees them reunited in a brand new K-drama! I just know we’ve got incredible chemistry to look forward to. And even I can’t believe how good the premise of this show sounds — wait for it, Kim Woo-bin plays a genie, freed by Bae Suzy and ready to grant her three wishes. Sign. Me. Up. Genuinely, I think this is the K-drama I’m most looking forward to this year. Even before I knew what the plot was.
Oh and did I mention it’s written by Kim Eun-sook who is responsible for such high-rating dramas as Goblin, Descendants of the Sun, The Heirs, Mr. Sunshine, The Glory and many others?
No hints on the premiere date yet, so for now I will try and pretend to be patient.
Carry Sun Jae and Run (TBC)
Very recently announced is the upcoming K-drama starring Byun Woo-Seok (who most recently wowed us with his performance as the villain in Strong Girl Nam-Soon) and Kim Hye-joon (if you haven’t seen her in Extraordinary You then … off you go! Watch it right now!). From the minimal details that have been revealed, this drama will involve time travel — whereby Kim Hye-joon’s character travels back in time to save the life of her favourite star. It’s written by the writer of True Beauty, so I’ll be watching this as soon as it begins airing!
A Life of a Resident That Will Be Wise Someday (TBC)
Confession: Despite its huge popularity, I have not (yet) watched Hospital Playlist (should I? Let me know!). And why is that important? Well, this is an upcoming spin-off, so Hospital Playlist fans, get ready! I’m sure this is going to be a hit with lovers of the original. It will follow the doctors at the Jongro branch of Yulje Medical Centre, specifically a first-year obstetrics resident.
I’m sure there’s going to be plenty more K-dramas to look forward to this year — if the above is anything to go by!
