Expecting miracles
Miracles are those things that happen to other people.
Miracles are for biblical stories, hallmark holiday movies of the week, and late night news — not everyday people in real life.
That is what I thought.
Recently, someone very close to me was hit with an incredible life challenge that will forever change her… and all of us who dearly love her.
She deserves a miracle.
Strangely, just prior to hearing her news, I had finished reading a book all about miracles where the author explains…
Miracles are a right for us all to experience.
This threw me. It felt like a completely different way of thinking compared to the catholic upbringing where it seemed only those who suffered or greatly sacrificed could find miracles. This is not the case.
It is our right to expect them.
Learning to expect miracles is work for me, something I have to purposefully remind myself that I have the right to… everyday
It’s become a daily mediation —
“Breathe in.. I believe in miracles everyday, breathe out… it is my right to expect them in my life”
breathe in.. I expect (insert miracle here)
… breathe out, I have an open heart and am grateful for this miracle.
(continue for as many miracles as you desire)
In a very challenging year personally, even prior to this recent event, this has become a life changing statement for me. In the book “May Cause Miracles”, the author initiates the thought, if you expect miracles, you will start to see them all around you.. in places you never noticed before. You will begin to attract and experience them.
I took the statement to heart and began to look around and see the miracles already in my life. Meeting my husband after the age of 35 in LA after being completely alone for 5 years… most single women here would call that a miracle. ;)
Having a perfectly healthy child after 40, I now realize, is so much more of a miracle than I thought.
Something simple like finding words to write every week that turns into something I am proud to share — and have it truly connect with others is a miracle to me.
Even that a family stretched around the globe can come together, close as ever in the midst of still unfathomable challenge is a definitely a miracle I am deeply grateful for.
For the things I dearly want in my life.. which most importantly includes a healthy future for my loved ones, I now see as miracles that have no choice but to happen. I expect them to.
I’m not a religious person for the most part, but I consider myself somewhat spiritual. I practice meditation, read my share of positive juju books, try to stay mindful, but that’s pretty much the extent of it.
I realize now, the beautiful, healing energy found believing in every day miracles is something I can not — not believe in. It changes everything —bringing gifts more powerful than we will ever realize.
Thanks GabbyB for your book. It connected with me in so many ways I never imagined and has given me great strength and self awareness.
