They’re role players because they’re one dimensional. It doesn’t mean they’re not valuable. In fact, it means exactly the opposite. I respect your view of Kyrie but I disagree, his plus/minus does not indicate he could transform a 30 win team into a 50 win team on his own. Melo was most successful when teams were built around him that covered for his weaknesses and didn’t take away from his strengths, guys who were super efficient with their touches and were all defense type performers on the other side (Billups, Camby, Nene, Chandler, etc) while Melo ate possessions and freed everyone up. This isn’t quite the same as other superstars who elevate everyone else or are just so efficient that basically laws of mathematics give their whole team an advantage every night. Kyrie is better than Melo at this point in time but he offers the same benefits and drawback as Prime Melo, and since a very specific type of environment is necessary for him to live up to his potential while he brings a very particular set of skills, I’m using the phrase “role player”.
