In June 2016, I was struggling to drive traffic to my website.
The traffic was terrible. The most I was getting was trickles of traffic (around 2–10 hits per day) and none of them are converting.
That’s when I have decided that I am going to change everything. I researched through hundreds of traffic strategies until I finally found 5 that worked for me.
Here is a glimpse of the strategies:

Unlike other strategies that are based on overused and rehashed link building strategies, the strategies that I am going to reveal to you is about implementing a plan that can help you get tons of highly converting traffic to your website. And these strategies are not based on theory. I have used these methods myself and it has increased the traffic of my website by 30%.
The good news is I am going to go through each strategy in detail. This means that you will get to implement the same tactics on your website as well.
Strategy #1 Referral Marketing
Did you know that word of mouth marketing is the most trusted form of advertising?
Turns out customers trust recommendations from their family and friends more than traditional advertising methods.
Because of this, referral marketing should be one of the pillars of your online marketing.
You can easily create a referral program for your business.
The goal of the referral program will be to get your customers to promote you to their network of friends and family. This is something that can be easily implemented and achieved.
To get started, you can use a referral marketing platform. In my website, I used Omnistar Affiliate Software.
The reason I went with Omnistar, was because they offered free integration and they have support.
Once you have your referral platform, all you need to do is create your referral campaign.
The best way to make this strategy successful is to offer your customers a discount or reward for promoting your store. On top of that, you can also offer their friends a discount if they sign up.
This will create a viral loop and that is the secret to referral marketing. You want to make your business go viral using this viral loop.
When implemented, you will be able to boost traffic and sales for your business.
Strategy #2: Email Marketing
Email marketing is another great strategy for boosting sales.
Did you know that email has an average ROI of $38 for each $1 spent?
Also, email is 40x more successful at acquiring new clients than either Facebook or Twitter?
With those types of facts and numbers, you definitely should jump into email marketing.
The secret with email marketing is that you need to set up marketing automation.
This is where once you get an email into your least, the system will tag them, add them to a list, and have them in a sequence where they will be receiving emails from you at the right time in their funnel.
You can use a tool like Active Campaign to set this up.
When you have a great automation sequence for your website, then all you need to start worrying about is adding customers to your funnel.
Marketing automation will take care of the rest.
Warning: You should not mistake email marketing with spamming your customers or your list.
Create an intentional marketing sequence and this type of sequence will boost your open rates and saels.
Strategy #3: Advanced SEO
SEO or search engine optimization is essential for ranking a website. It is the process of tweaking website elements or backlinks so that search engine robots will believe that your site is about a particular topic. When it does, it will rank you for that target keyword.
However, SEO is easier to read than implement. There were a lot of people who have tried it and they always end up failing. Why? It is not because they have not learned enough but because they are doing SEO the wrong way.
SEO starts with keyword research. This is the process where you gather keywords with high traffic volume and low competition with the goal of ranking in the front page of the search engines. Keyword research, however, is often done in overused websites like Google Keyword Planner. What’s the problem with this tool? Well, it is not created for keyword research. In fact, it is created for Adwords advertisers.
This gap should not be ignored as this will affect the results of your keyword research, hurting your chance of getting ranked on the first page of the search engines. So what can you do?
As for me, I try to use another tool called SEMRush. I like it because it has so many options on how to search for keywords.
First, you can use the tool to explore basic keyword metrics. This includes the number of search results, search volume and competitor number. On the side, is a graph. This displays the trend for your keyword. Why is the graph important? Well, it tells you if the search volume for that keyword is consistent through the entire year. This will prevent you from targeting a keyword that has amazing search volume for this month only to have it go down the next. What you want is a keyword that has a consistent number of search volume per month.
Aside from basic metrics, you’ll also notice a tab that has the following sections: Phrase Match, related Keywords and Ad History. Each tab is valuable in getting more information about your main keyword.
The Phrase Match section will give you a list of keywords that has the exact phrase that you have coded. For example, if you have searched for “neck ties”, you’ll get variations of that keyword such as “blue neck ties” and “long neck ties”. You get the idea.
Here is an example of the Phrase Match section in SEMRush.
TIP: You can use the tool to harvest longtail keywords. All you have to do is click on ‘advanced filters’ and choose the number of words from the dropdown menu. For longtails, you would set it to 5 to 7. For medium tail keywords, you can set it from 3 to 4. This will reset the search and have it display keywords that has multiple words in them.
If you need more keyword ideas, you can use the Related Keywords section. This will give you keywords that will not contain the exact phrase in your main keyword but they are related to it. It may be better for you to try out the tool so that you can see the results that it generates. Here is an example.
And that’s not all. SEMRush also has a Keyword Magic Tool. You can use this to automatically generate keyword ideas from one parent keyword. I think that this is just an advanced version of the Related Keywords Section. It is still in Beta though.
The third tab- Ads History — may not seem that valuable at first glance. But if you think about it. You can get a glimpse of all the ads for your keyword. What can this give you? More keyword ideas of course!
TIP: If you are going to research keywords using SEMRush, don’t forget to take note of your keyword difficulty. Keyword difficulty or KD is a metric that’s unique to SEMRush and is based on the number of websites competing for that keyword.
Plus, you can also use the tool to steal your competitor’s keywords. Simply key in your competitor’s URL and it will immediately reveal information about that website. First, you’ll see a quick overview. Then, you can click on ‘Organic Keywords’ and see the keywords that they are ranking for.
As you can see, SEMRush is one powerful tool. You may need to spend some money in order to use it but it is all worth it. It is impossible to do advanced SEO if you don’t have tools like SEMRush. Free tools will often leave some data hidden.
I hope this section has allowed you to gather keywords that are worth ranking for. In the next section, I’ll teach you how to use these keywords to generate backlinks to your website.
Strategy #4: Backlinking on Steroids
What’s the first thing that enters your mind when you hear ‘backlinking on steroids’? It will probably give you ideas on blackhat marketing and other spammy methods. Don’t worry. There’s none of that in this section. Instead, I will teach you methods on how to find backlink places that works.
For this section, I will be using a tool called Ahrefs. Ahrefs is a competition research tool. It allows you to not only get the metrics of a particular website (as in SEMRush), it also allows you to look at your competitor’s backlinks. If you have been doing SEO for quite some time, you’ll know how backlinking is very important in ranking your site. And if you are in a highly competitive niche, ranking is harder simply because your competitors would have already gathered thousands of high authority backlinks to secure their positions.
So what can you do? Well, Ahrefs has a way of unraveling a website’s backlinks. You will use this feature to gather their backlinks so that you can copy them. It is a simple backlink-copy technique.
But it does not stop there. I have added a little twist. After all, your competitor’s backlinkers will not link to you without a reason, right? Well, they will if you do it at the right time.
For this, we will use the Backlink Alert strategy. This is where you setup a Backlink Alert at Ahrefs so that you are notified each time a competitor gets a new backlink.
Then, you will click on that link and ask the linker to link to you as well. Easy-peasy.
Aside from Backlinks, you can also note some brand mentions. This is a good way to gather some backlinks if you are in the same niche with the competitor. You can ask people who have mentioned them to also mention you as well.
NOTE: You need to have content that is worth linking to if you choose to go this route. You cannot just email them and ask them to link to you right off the bat. You need to have something that’s worth sharing. The best way to do this is to have a competitor content upgrade. This is where you take the competitor’s content and add something more to it so that your content is better than theirs. This will often convince their linkers to link to you as well.
Strategy #5: List Explosion Method
I have seen tons of people struggling with list building. The problem? They are following the wrong advice.
List building is often perceived as a systematic manner where you create an offer, create a squeeze page, drive traffic and get subscribers. However, doing that will reveal that it is not often the case. Here’s where it goes wrong. When marketers follow the classic method, they always end up creating something that’s similar with everybody. The result? No one believes them and no one signs up.
Don’t do that. We live in the Internet age where everything is searchable. If you will only create another freebie that people have to sign up for, they will just ignore you. Unless you make the conscious effort to stand out, you will not get people into your website.
So what can you do? You can try doing the list explosion method.
Here’s how you do it.
STEP 1: Find Out What Your Market Likes
The first step is to find out what your market likes. This may involve talking to them or engaging them in online communities like social networks and forums. The key is to find specific products or services that they are after. Of course, it may vary based on your niche.
For example, you may want to give away a gaming laptop if you are in the gaming niche. You may also want to give out some monthly subscriptions for tools if you are in the online marketing niche. The list can go on. The goal is to find one product or service that is sought after by the market.
STEP 2: Multiply the Value By 10 and Give it to Them
Once you find the product or service that is appealing to your market, it is time to multiply its value by 10 times. How? You just give 10 more pieces away or give 10-month subscriptions.
Why do you need to do this? Well, it increases your offer and distinguishes it from the competition. From here, signing up to your list is a no-brainer.
STEP 3: Setup Your Contest
For this part, you’ll need a tool like JustUno to help setup your contest. This will allow you to have high converting pop-ups in your website so that you can easily capture emails in just about any page.
STEP 4: Market Your Contest
Now that you have found the product that your market likes, it is time to look for them. You can do this by marketing your blog on social networks or websites that have the same market. Website owners would often share contests like these because it helps their readers. So don’t be afraid to approach some website owners if you feel that their market will like your contest.
As you can see, the list explosion method is all about creating a contest to encourage people to sign up to your website. Instead of a traditional offer, you are now offering something of value that people actually want. The best part? No more slaving away in creating an ebook or course for your site. Just plug in a contest and you’re ready to go.
