For most people, social media is a bloodsucking leech that robs people’s mental health instead of their blood.

I’m astounded at how poorly people use social media. Everyone knows — even if people don’t follow — the significance of a healthy diet. Social media, however, is like your diet. You have to watch your consumption; you have to ensure you control it.

Of course, social media has benefits. It enables you to stay in touch with people you’d otherwise never see again. Social media also — even if nefarious big tech companies are censoring free speech — allows people to voice their political opinions. In places like Hong Kong, where authorities suppress liberties, it gives power to the little people.

But for the average human: social media is terrible.

For instance, statistics suggest depression in boys grew by 21% in boys and 50% in girls from 2012 to 2015. By 2015, 92% of teens and young adults had a smartphone. In the United States, eighth-graders who spend over 10 hours per week on social media are 56% more likely to be unhappy. Moreover, 59% of teens report cyberbullying and online harassment.
