Jira is a pretty good software that helps in planning, executing, assigning, managing, etc. However most team members do not know how to use this software or how it works.

Jira Software is owned by Atlassian. The mission of Atlassian as a company is to unleash the potential of every team with the use of softwares they have provided. Jira Software as an agile project management tool supports any agile methodology. It can help a team identify roadmap and work effectively while following it.

I am going to do a quick run of how Jira works. This is for newbies. I will be using the flow we use in my team.

Before having a Jira account, you are definitely going to have an atlassian account. Creating a Jira account that will be used to manage a team would be better if created with an Admin email.

From the image shown, you are seeing my default page for Atlassian’s home page. Each number rounded are explained below:

  1. Shows an option to see more products from atlassian.
  2. Shows an option to log in to trello. Trello is a web-based, Kanban-style, list-making application and is developed by Trello Enterprise, a subsidiary of Atlassian.
  3. This takes you to Jira Software which will probably empty at first except you probably start/create a project.

Upon creation of the Atlassian account with an Admin email, Project will and should always be created by the team lead for an Admin access and control.

The Jira page as seen looks empty but isn’t. What needs to be done now is to create project(s) and start managing from there. Like I said, I am only going to show a basic way of doing this. Upon clicking “Create project”, what we have in the image below is what pops up.

Like I said, this articles isn’t to put you through all Jira’s workflow but to go straight to the point on how I use it. The image below shows the part of choosing a project template.

To track activities, tasks and also have several managing tools for a project, process control should be used. You’re simply controlling a process. A Project name will be given next.

So I named this project which I want to manage Jira for newbies. Upon creating, the next thing to do like I did, is to understand tasks and create tasks in form of sprints.

IMG-5

The image above is how Jira appears after you have created a project. Take out some time to view and observe the image attached in IMG-5.

Managing projects on a board and assigning tasks to several members of a team was the way I started using Jira as an associate product manager.

IMG-6 shows the project’s board, but with the first sprint having a task/to-do.

In the next article on Jira, I will take you further. Hit follow on my medium account now.

Thanks!
