I Hope: A Poem

If the world ended tomorrow…

If the world ended tomorrow, I hope:

We worked.

To feed the hungry

To clothe the cold

To shelter the homeless

To do the right thing.

If the world ended tomorrow, I hope:

We learn from each other.

Decency

Honor

Respect

History.

If the world ended tomorrow, I hope:

We kept the faith.

We chose to believe a better world is possible

We fought for fairness and justice

We worked as much as we prayed

We were a shepherd for the weak.

If the world ended tomorrow, I hope:

We were still driven by wonder.

To explore

To nourish

To protect

To create.

If the world ended tomorrow, I hope:

We didn’t surrender.

To apathy

To greed and corruption

To ignorance

To hatred in the heart.

If the world ended tomorrow, I hope:

We made peace.

With our foes

With our neighbors

With our families

With ourselves.

We will wake up tomorrow.

We will breathe tomorrow

We will laugh tomorrow

We will mourn tomorrow

We will cherish what goodness we have, until the time comes that we no longer can.

For the world will not end tomorrow.

Will we not do the right thing?

Will we not leave our children with a better world?

We can do it

And we will.
