A Prose Poem about a Teenage Crush

Photo by Amy Humphries on Unsplash

My heart soars like a kite on a windy day,
As a silent hello escapes from your mouth.
An affectionate smile is carved on your face,
As you look at me with stars in your eyes.

We christen it our Valentine’s place,
Right in the heart of the common room,
Where others are oblivious to our knowing smiles,
Or the dozens of butterflies in my stomach.

All the way from the main avenue,
Across the foyer where bougainvillea snow falls,
Right past the rows of white painted benches,
This is our usual place, our Valentine’s place!

Poem

Nothing moves save for a butterfly,
A whisper at the tip of its wings,
Breaking the stillness of the night.
Clouds part for the moonlight to shine through,
A kaleidoscope of colours flutter around us.
Your eyes are like two bright lakes,
Willing me to swim in them,
Soaking myself in the essence of you —
The moon watches as we dance,
To the rhythm of the butterfly wings.
