And what do you call an investor who gives an entrepreneur millions of dollars without doing basic diligence — a la Theranos? By your own definition, that person would be a gambler.

I have a good friend who works as a commercial banker. The level of diligence that banks perform when writing a business loan is miles ahead of your typical VC. If there is information that you are capable of easily gathering about an investment before spending your money, but you don’t, you’ve just made a gamble, and not a calculated risk. By your own definition.
