Reverse image searching is a process of searching the web using an image. Results will be the original file or very similar options. TinEye.com was the first of these search engines to come about and in this article we will take a look at this incredible tool. Launched in 2008 the project was created with copyright owners and brand marketers as the intended users to search unauthorised use of imagery.

Today TinEye constantly crawls the internet to add images to it’s index, of which it claims to have over 62 billion on record. TinEye allows users to search image URLs or upload JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and WebP images up to 20mb in size. Simply go to the search bar and choose either option.

Example

1- Using this image from an article on BBC news, i’m going to right click and copy the URL address

2- Then I’ll paste the URL into TinEye’s search bar and hit enter
