Memoirs of A Closet Sociopath

“There is no war in Ba Sing Se”

I was supposed to write this 2 weeks ago, but I guess it’s better late than never.

Almost 2 weeks ago, the NBC isssued a directive to all media houses in Nigeria, instructing them not to report on the activities of kidnappers and terrorists herdsmen.

In their defense, however it is feeble, they don’t want Nigerians to be demoralized by the constant bad news. So this media houses shouldn’t report it.

This reminds me of a scene from the hit Nickelodeon series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender’. Avatar Aang and his friends had travelled to an earth kingdom called Ba Sing Se. They warned the king of the war that the fire nation was bringing.

The king refused to believe this news and sent out government officials to tell his people that “There is no war in Ba Sing Se”. Anyone who said otherwise was captured by his secret police, never to be seen again. It wasn’t until the war got to his doorstep that he saw he had been foolish all along.

The Nigerian government reminds me of that king. Arrest everyone who has genuine concern about the way the country is being run. Strike fear into would-be critics by sending the DSS after them. And ask the rest to pray to Allah or Yahweh to save them from kidnappers and terrorists.

But unlike the king from Ba Sing Se, this war would never get them. Just the innocent people that support them
