Battle of the Maps
I have become deeply excited and curious about the ongoing battle for what renowned cartographer, Justin O’Beirne calls the first universal map. In his essay, “The Universal Map”, O’Beirne explains that in the past, there were millions of different paper maps scattered all over the world. Now, however, O’Beirne has noticed that several maps are contesting to become the map of the world.
Universal Map Rankings:
- Google Maps
- Apple Maps
- Waze
- OpenStreetMap
- Here Maps
The list goes on and on. Right now, I believe that Google Maps is the current universal map of the world, and should continue its onslaught unless some surprise happens. With the most users and highest level of accuracy, there seems to be no true competition. The cartography on Google Maps is very appealing to the eye. The design is on point and better than its competitors. We will have to wait for a while to see Google Maps lose its top spot in the map rankings!
