Contrary to popular believe, there are lots of examples of great city / regional planning that can solve both the transportation / traffic and housing problem all at once. Smart development that allow dense, mixed use development around transit hubs (metro stops, train stations) is a great way to make this happen. It’s greener (people drive less) and helps with traffic congestion, and can really help address the housing problem. The DC metro area is a great example of urban planning done right. Each metro stop essentially creates a “mini” downtown — cluster of high density development that gets progressively less dense the further out it goes.

Bottomline, the ability to start or raise a family and being close to ones job shouldn’t be a zero sum choice.
