Import the Material Design color palette into Sketch 3
As far as I know, there’s no way to share native Sketch 3 color palettes yet, so here’s is a quick workaround using the native Mac OS color picker in Sketch 3 (which is searchable and arguably easier to use).
Instructions
- Open the Colors Window in Sketch by going to View > Show Colors
- Select the Color Palettes tab:
- Click on the gear icon in the top right corner, select Open then choose the Material Design Color Palette.clr file which you can download here.
- Now you have all the Material Design colors in one place! Enjoy!
You can also drag and drop the CLR file into your user Library > Colors folder (Click Go in the desktop menu bar, hold down Alt and select Library > Colors) It’ll appear once you restart Sketch.
Create & share
To create your own color palette, open the Colors Window in Sketch by going to View > Show Colors. Click on the gear icon, and select New. It defaults to “Unnamed” for some reason so you have to click the gear icon again to Rename it.
You can input hex numbers in the Sliders tab (at the bottom right):
Then go back to the Color Palette tab and click the “+” icon under the gear. (You can also click and drag the color swatch into the list):
Note: There is no way to change the order of this list, or edit the color unless you delete and re-enter it so be careful!
Not sure if this is a universal problem, but when I’ve used the eyedropper tool, the hex number it picked up was different than the one I set it in Sketch so watch out for this.
To share it, open your user Library > Colors folder (Click Go in the desktop menu bar, hold down Alt and select Library > Colors). The .clr file should be there ready to share!
