It’s no secret that horror movies are well loved and popular. People like to be scared. The feeling of your adrenaline rushing and the burn in your throat after a good scream is like no other. Some of the movies that proclaim themselves to be horror movies are so bad though, that you can’t help yourself but to laugh. They’re so terrible that they cross back into being good. Here is a list of horror movies so bad that they’re funny.

5. Sharktopus Vs. Whalewolf (2015)

“Sharktopus Vs. Whalewolf” is absolutely awful. It’s slightly slow in some spots, and it definitely plays up stereotypes, but the bad CGI and the even worse plot adds some quality entertainment. This is the third movie in the franchise, and to be honest, I have not seen the first two movies. In it, a mad scientist does her best to play with DNA to create some rather awful creatures, and these creatures don’t like anyone else — including each other. There’s quite a few fight scenes, with some amazingly bad CGI thrown in. If you want a few laughs, sit down with a friend and take some time to make fun of this bad movie.

4. Shark Exorcist (2015)

“Shark Exorcist” has many of the same complaints as Sharktopus Vs. Whalewolf: it can get slow, and it plays up stereotypes. What is it with shark movies?! If you have patience however, this movie can provide. It plays the same bad CGI every time the demon shark comes up, and apparently the shark can possess people? I’ll be real honest, I skipped parts of this movie, and apparently a lot went on in the parts that I missed, because I did not understand the plot of this movie at all. The confusion just added to the charm. In addition to the bad CGI shark, there’s a possibly evil nun, a priest, a valley girl straight from 2005, and some evil ritual that goes on. I have no idea either. If you want some fun though, give this movie a go!

3. Mothman (2010)

“Mothman” was funny in a different way than either of the shark movies. It had potential to be scary if it hadn’t been absolutely awful in the way so many movies from the 2010’s were. They used real lore from the Mothman legend of Point Pleasant, WV, but they also added to it and made the mothman some odd conglomeration of Bloody Mary and Mothman with an odd revenge plot thrown in for good measure. If that weren’t enough, there was a “horror movie meets Hallmark” feel to the film. The plot was insane, the CGI was once again bad (shocker, I know), and there were so many weird aspects to this movie. Overall, I love it. Absolutely would recommend it, this is the perfect movie to make fun of with a friend.

2. Killer Sofa (2019)

“Killer Sofa” was genuinely a good movie, with interesting lore. Whereas the shark movies had issues with pacing, this movie felt like it was really well done. They really thought outside the IKEA box with this one. As good a movie as it was though, it was also absolutely terrible, as one would expect when watching a movie about a recliner that kills people. The chair has a mouth and eyes. That is very obviously a face. If I found a recliner that looked like a grumpy old man, I would make so many jokes. This grumpy old man recliner ends up falling in love with the women who took him home and killing everyone who’s interested in her, until the end, when they finally realize that the chair is at fault and try to do something about it. Poorly, of course. I’ve watched this movie multiple times, and I ask all my new friends to watch it. I genuinely love this movie, and it is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. I highly recommend it. If you take any of my movie suggestions, I suggest starting here. I have absolutely no complaints about this movie.

1. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

Most people have probably at least heard of “Killer Klowns From Outer Space,” and if you were alive when it came out, maybe it even got the opportunity to scare the heck out of you. If you’re my age though and used to modern horror movies, all this movie provides is a bucket of laughs. It is from the 1980’s, so there are a few jokes in the film that no one would think okay to make today, but once the movie actually starts getting into the plot, those die out real quick. This movie is crazy, with extremely bad effects, interesting methods of killing people, and entertaining ideas. If you want a movie that feels like the 80’s and 90’s while providing you chuckles and bad horror, this movie is for you. It’s another one of those movies that I like to force my friends to watch.

And one purposefully bad movie:

EXTRA: The Dead Don’t Die (2019)

This movie purposefully takes stereotypes in horror movies, puts all of them into this one film, and then a ton of sarcasm and dry wit. With stars such as Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Selena Gomez, Tilda Swinton, and other big name actors, it genuinely surprises me how few people have heard of this movie. You don’t have to make fun of it, because the film does that for you. It takes the classic zombie movie and mocks it beautifully. I’d never thought that Adam Driver and Bill Murray could team up to create such a perfect movie, but they, combined with their co-stars, have done it. This is it, the pinnacle of human perfection, everyone else can go home now. This is a top tier movie, and I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of satire, sarcasm, and dry humor.

The first four movies can be found for free on Tubi! Unfortunately, if you want to watch “Killer Klowns From Outer Space” or “The Dead Don’t Die”, you’ll need to rent them, purchase them, or have a premium subscription to one of the streaming services that contains them, such as Hulu. It’s absolutely worth it though, and if you have some extra time this holiday season, I definitely recommend grabbing a loved one who shares your sense of humor and watching a movie or two.
