Building a Home Page with Navigation Icons for One-Click Access to Multiple Dashboards.
In the world of data visualization, efficiency and accessibility are paramount. While working on a project involving multiple dashboards for data consolidation, I encountered a common challenge: navigating seamlessly between various dashboards. This sparked an idea — why not create a centralized landing page that allows users to effortlessly navigate to different dashboards? Tableau, with its robust navigation button feature, offers a perfect solution for this.
During my training period, I created a landing page dashboard as a project exercise. This experience laid the foundation for developing a more advanced and practical implementation for my current project. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the process of creating an interactive landing page in Tableau, transforming your scattered dashboards into a cohesive, user-friendly data navigation hub. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced Tableau user, this tutorial will help you enhance your data storytelling and user experience by making your dashboards more accessible and intuitive. Let’s dive in!
Step 1: Create Your Landing Page Dashboard
Start by creating a new blank dashboard in Tableau. Drag a vertical container onto the dashboard; this will hold the icons for navigation. Next, drag two navigation buttons from the objects pane into the vertical container.
Step 2: Take the vertical container to the right side of the dashboard.
Step 3: Place the text box on the right side of the vertical container and then provide the name of the first dashboard.
Step 4: Add Dashboard Names
Use text boxes to label each navigation button with the corresponding dashboard names. Here, I am adding names for two dashboards to create a home page.
Step 5: Double-click the Navigation button. A popup window will appear. In this window, enter the title of the navigation dashboard along with the icon. In the tooltip area, write the navigation name corresponding to the title. Repeat the same process for the other dashboard.
After adding all the dashboard icons and fields, the layout appears as shown in the image below.
Step 6 : Distribute the containers evenly.
Step 7:Drag the blank object and place it above, below, to the right, and to the left of the icons.
Step 8: Drag the text box and place it at the top. Then, provide the name of the dashboard.
Step 9 :Go to the first dashboard and drag the navigation button to the top right corner. Double-click it to open a popup window. Here, provide the details for the homepage and select the homepage icon for navigation.
After creating this homepage, you can click on the homepage icon at the top by using Alt + click, which will take you directly to the homepage. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut key Ctrl + Enter for this action.
Step 10 : To create navigation from the left side for all the dashboards, follow these steps:
First, place a horizontal container. Next, drag the navigation button into that container. Then, add a text box and enter the names of the dashboards along with their icons. Finally, clicking or using the Ctrl + Enter button will navigate to the appropriate dashboard.
