Lovely, Kate! This reminds me of the first time my now defunct band performed in public, which was at a Chinese retirees' center in Brooklyn. We were frightened to death of them.

None of us spoke Chinese, and they didn’t speak English. We were counter-programmed with some grapes and a board game, and many of the retirees seemed perfectly happy ignoring us as we strutted around in front of them.

Afterwards, though, they wanted to take photos with “the band,” so we posed with each and every one of them, in a photo parade that lasted far longer than our set. That, of course, was a thousand times more fun for everybody than was our terrible music. They actually enjoyed themselves, and we felt vaguely more like rock stars.
