Even though I’m interested in technology, I’m urged to write about this topic as most of the jobs we are looking for are not well fitted with our skill set. This is a very subjective topic and anyone can agree or disagree according to their experience and where they want see themselves in ten years. My students frequently question me about how their set of skills could land them on their next destination.

In tech industry, majority of people commence their career as a software engineer. Later, they move on to the next level according to the company requirement, without a clear understanding about what they really want to achieve. After 20 years in tech industry, I decided to hark back and evaluate how skills trade off between subjective knowledge and job role in tech industry.

Scaling is one of the most valuable rules in modern world; the company must scale their clientele in order to achieve the next financial goal, the solution must be scaled vertically & horizontally in order to fulfil new customer requirements, the government must be scaled in order to provide more facilities to general public. Therefore, job role must be scaled because of various reasons. However, uncontrolled scaling comes at cost therefore everyone must have an idea how it scales. Before scaling, we should know where we currently stand and where we wish to be, in future.

The above Venn diagram illustrates how subjects (mathematics and statistic, management, computer science, business domain) are intercepting each other and formulating different skill areas in tech industry.

Above table is not an ultimate classification of job roles vs subject areas. Everything can be changed according to the company requirement and culture. This gives you a basic idea about how the subject area and skill derive the job role and how you can identify the skills that you require for different job roles. In addition, identifying the path is not sufficient enough; your performance in your respective role, incorporation of best practices in your job role, automation of the recurring tasks in job role and the influence of artificial intelligence on your role.
