Amy, why not just provide the candidate with information about the salary band? If they know what the absolute top of the band is, they can make an informed decision not to waste their own time, and the company’s time.

As a professor in Silicon Valley, I tell students it’s unethical to shop around for offers. If the job you’ve interviewed for isn’t your first or second choice, based on what you learn during your interviews, don’t negotiate, even if you receive a job offer. I realize that by giving this advice, I am telling students they should give up leverage they could use against their current employer, but they will preserve their reputations.
