How does one learn to code? That’s what I’m doing now, so I guess I should know; but the number of approaches and resources can be overwhelming. It seems like the best way to learn coding is just to write code. This makes sense, but after hours spent on Google trying to piece something together from blogs, Stack Overflow posts, and YouTube videos, you may start to question whether you could take it all apart and start again.

I would like to better understand what I’m doing, and get better at studying coding. In my preparation for Hack Reactor, I spent a lot of time reading blog posts and books online, going through various tutorials, and trying to complete coding challenges. There were some great resources in all of that, but I don’t know how essential all of it was. Perhaps more importantly, the number of resources available meant a lot of time just trying to figure out where to start and where to go next.

As I try to really learn the concepts being covered in our sprints, I’m running into some of the same issues. It’s great that there are so many blogs and videos out there, but given the time constraints, knowing where to start and where to go next are even more important. I know learning new languages, frameworks, and concepts quickly will be vital to a career in software engineering, and I will keep working at it. Hopefully by the time I finish, I will be better both at coding and learning to code. If not, I guess I’ll just Google something.
