Abigail Jones was born with a death sentence. She was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour weeks after she was born. The doctors treating Abigail told her parents that the cancer was highly aggressive and there was nothing they could do. They said any surgery they attempted would only cut short her life…
So her parents took the horrible decision to take little Abigail home to die…
Days passed, then weeks and baby Abigail didn’t die…Instead she started thriving. Despite the fact she was also diagnosed with down syndrome, she started to put on weight, grew and began to respond to the people around her.
Her parents understandably started to hope that the news they’d been given was false. So they decided to seek out another opinion from the experts at Boston Children’s hospital. Dr. Alan R. Cohen, neurosurgeon-in-chief looked at the scans and thought the tumour might not be malignant after all.
“I spoke to mom on the phone and told her that I thought there was enough question about the diagnosis that we should not give Abigail a death sentence,” said Dr. Cohen.
Erika Jones, Abigails mum responded with an emotional blog post:
It’s terrifying to put life back on the table. It scares me to hope” Erika wrote. “But someone said to me, ‘you won’t regret hope’. So I’m allowing myself to hope, and pretty recklessly right now. Suddenly, I think my baby is going to live. Truly I do. Even though they still say it’s a very long shot. But I’ll take it.”
There was only a small chance that the tumour would not be malignant. But when they met with the consultant they were greeted with the best news they could have possibly hoped for.
A second MRI confirmed the doctors’ suspicions that the tumour wasn’t malignant. Abigail went straight into surgery to remove it. The operation was successful and the surgeon said there was no reason for the tumour to return!
Abigail’s prognoses looks good. We wish her all the best in her recovery from surgery and in her life ahead.
