Is the US the new Banana Republic?
The US is on the brink of a constitutional crisis derived from a longstanding social crisis; that reminds us of some Latin American or African countries. These are some of the signs we observe from the outside:
- Profound inequality between regions, cities and people.
- Great ideological division and polarization.
- A small elite concerned with maintaining its privileges.
- The desperate poor battling to survive.
- The middle class losing ground and unable to make an impact in politics.
- A huge military budget that consumes precious resources.
- Shrinking social budget that is unable to compensate for inequalities.
- Loss of rights and liberties for the majority.
- The militarization of police.
- Drug enforcement and incarceration for the poor.
- Ruling parties fighting for power and unable to solve the real issues.
- An all-out war on free press.
- General disenchantment with its institutions.
- Loss of hope and expectation; no positive vision of the future.
- Fear as the ultimate lever for political control.
- Internal and external enemies to deviate attention from the real issues.
- Family and cronies in government.
- A president unwilling to summit to the rule of law.
- Last but not least, a foreign power meddling in its internal affairs.
This is definitely an unprecedented situation for the US and for the World. Does the US have enough constitutional power to check and correct this situation?
Is there room for some grass-root movement that can create a positive way out?
While most of its allies and enemies are cautiously assessing the new situation, plan B for them is a new World Order without the US as its headmaster.
