I didn’t have much success in sticking to healthy eating, because I would crave sugar and flattening foods — they tasted so much better! Food that was considered “healthy” was also remarkably soul-less!

Realizing how important flavour is to me, my ‘dadi’ had some dissenting opinion on the youth’s fascination with healthy eating. With such enthusiasm in her eyes, she would talk about her cooking days, on how she used spices that not only made the food taste great but also kept the health of the entire family in check.

Here are the five super spices that pack major health benefits:

  1. Jeera (cumin seeds)

Cumin is a dried, aromatic and smokier spice that is a native of Middle-East and is used in various Mediterranean and Indian cuisines.

It helps to control blood sugar while providing a distinctive flavor while keeping the calories in single-digit.

2. Haldi (turmeric)

Turmeric is coined as the most powerful of all spices. And in every household, it is a go-to fix for all health problems. It occurs naturally in the Southern Asia and this orange spice brings an earthy flavor to the dishes with an appetizing taste.

Turmeric improves digestion and also contains cancer-fighting antioxidants.

3. Tawak/Dal-cheeni (cinnamon)

Cinnamon has its kingdom in Indonesia and China. A pinch of cinnamon is a great replacement for sugar in beverages, and also adds a lovely kick to smoothies. This sweet spice regulates blood sugar, which helps reduce appetite and decrease storage of fat.

And you will be on a faster path on losing weight with a content feeling.

4. Elaichi (cardamom)

Cardamom are generic to Asian countries and has been used as a digestive aid for centuries, mostly as an additive in tea. It has also been said to cure sugar cravings (something I definitely need) and serves as a natural breath freshener. Cardamom is warming and aromatic when cooked, and is a low-calorie burst of flavours.

Crack one seed open slightly and add cardamom directly to a cup of tea for the famous Elaichi chai.

5. Javitri (mace)

Mace spice, aka Javitri, is that one ingredient that makes a delectable culinary addition. It keeps your digestive system healthy, encourages appetite and boosts blood circulation as well.

Javitri, is also used as a natural stress buster as it releases mental exhaustion.
