Social Justice in the Classroom

The rigid dichotomy between school and real life has put curriculum in a state of isolation. During isolation curriculum evolved into the monster that it has become.

Dear Arturo, I empathize with your concern. I’ve walked into many classrooms and thought, what is going on in here? Why should I care if it is so disconnected from my life?

Today, I talked with my co-operating teacher about a class that she is taking on teaching GATE. The lecturer, Ronald Beghetto, talked about planning curriculum around student interests and real life problems. For example, students come up with a real-life problem in their lives or in their community and the curriculum is created around that. It was a very quick conversation but it sparked my interest and I want to find out more about it. From my understanding though, this type of curriculum allows for more authentic investigations and creativity in the classroom.
