Is Digital Technology Negatively Impacting Our Cognitive Functions?

Introduction:

The internet is the most fundamental enticing technology that has come into worldwide use. Technology is transforming how people read, think, process information and maintain attention. This essay will explore the negative effects of technology, particularly regarding the reliance and even addiction to social media, in addition to considering how this has impacted upon reading habits.

Section 1:

How Does Digital Technology Affect How the Brain Works?

There is an endless amount of information, distractions and the desire to multitask on the internet. The resultant consequence is reduced capacity for deep thought and prolonged focus. This section will consider how the perpetual state of interruptions and distractions negatively impacts on attention spans and how attention is now being degraded into shorter intervals. This is exemplified, in that the average human attention span has shortened from initially being twelve seconds in 2000 to then plummeting to eight seconds in 2015.
