What Are the Different Types of Level Transmitters for Various Media

Level transmitter is a kind of instrument, which will provide constant level measurements. They are normally used for determining the level of certain liquid or bulk-solid.

Level transmitters and level switches are not the same, since level switches only sound alarm as the material level reaches a certain predetermined level. In this article, we shall briefly discuss about different types of level transmitter.

There are mainly 6 types of different level transmitters and each of them work differently, and useful for few different processes.

  1. Radar fill level transmitters

These transmitters just like radars, use radio emissions and usually mounted either at or near top of tank filled with liquid. The transmitter will send out radar signal into liquid in tank and will receive reflection from that signal.

Then the transmitters will accurately calculate current to fill level of tank depending on how much time it will take transmitted signal to reflect.

2. Ultrasonic level transmitter

Ultrasonic level transmitter, will also act in similar manner to non-contact radar fill type level transmitters. In this transmitter, ultrasonic transducer will be mounted either to or near top of container and send out ultrasonic pulse.

As the pulse will hit the liquid surface, it will be reflected back, and the sensor will calculate the fill level depending on time between pulse and return signal.

3. Guided microwave level transmitters

Level transmitter of this type will work by sending microwave or an electromagnetic pulse through sensor rod/cable. As the signal will hit surface of liquid, it will travel back up sensor rod and also back to transmitter housing.

All electronics are placed in the transmitter housing, that decide filling level from time taken for signal in travelling down sensor rod and also back up again. This value will then be shown in display of transmitter.

4. Magnetic level transmitters

These transmitters, will use small, magnetic object that is suspended in buoyant float. Usually this is inside narrow auxiliary column, for restricting float to have any lateral movement.

As float sits on liquid top, different magnetic device will measure movement of float. This will allow accurate and consistent transmission of fill level and suitable for continuous measurement, because of float’s tendency to sink or rise in harmony with liquid level.

5. Capacitance level transmitters

These transmitters are named from capacitors which is an electrical circuit element which can temporarily store energy for circuit to use. Between 2 insulated electrodes, capacitors will store energy.

Non-conductive medium will be placed between two electrodes for storing electrical charge. If the medium is dielectric then more energy will be stored. Hence, capacitance level transmitters use liquid in tank as dielectric medium between 2 or more electrodes.

6. Hydrostatic level transmitters

This type of transmitter is also called pressure level transmitters, to determine fluid contents of container by measuring pressure of resting fluid body within it. If the force of liquid is bigger then, fluid volume inside container too will be bigger.
