Had Rodgers and Hammerstein written a musical about the things that I love, they definitely would have included whiskers on kittens, warm woolen mittens and brown paper packages tied up with string, but the rest of the song could easily have been about napping.

I love sleep.

But getting enough sleep, especially with a fully-packed schedule can be tricky.

So as a reminder to myself, and to anyone else who is struggling with getting enough sleep, here is my solution to telling my brain to shut up and get some rest:

A nighttime routine.

I’ve spent years cultivating my nighttime routine to force myself to stop thinking about what needs to be done and redirect my focus to the task at hand. For me that includes walking my dog, drinking a cup of tea, reading a book, a fairly dramatic skincare routine, and very comfortable pajamas.

By doing this every night, I’m able to trick my brain into knowing it’s time to wind down a couple of hours before my head hits the pillow and as a result, I can be far more productive the following day.
