Yes, in addition to the complex history of racism in the US, we are paying the very dear price for our long-term (and not just in the United States) of government that serve corporations above the needs of people. I agree, this is not hyperbole, but an ugly, continued truth, that has been made so normal, as to be invisible. What do we do?
