how I found myself here.

December 15th, 2018 was my 2 year anniversary at Zalando. I’d like to share with you a little bit about the journey of the past two years…

Before I left the states, I had been working in geo/mapping for 6 years. At some point in mid-2016, I decided to upend my life and move to Berlin. You can learn about why I did that here. A few months after I moved to Berlin, I found work at Zalando. (What is Zalando? Zalando is an online fashion retail platform in 16 other European countries. They made 4.5 billion in sales in 2017 and have about 15,000 employees.)

When I started at Zalando, I was a Producer with a team who builds algorithms to optimize flow and prioritization of packages within the warehouse. I loved how tangible the work was and I really enjoyed visiting our warehouses to see the work in action.

But I was missing something. And that something was community work and the ability to have impact at scale. In Philly, I had founded a meetup group and supported the Summer of Maps program at Azavea. I wanted the opportunity to build a better community, in Berlin too. In January 2018, I moved into a Community Management role with 50% of my time devoted to Zalando’s Diversity Guild. I spent my working hours on projects like supporting Intl. Women’s Day & our participation in Christopher Street Day (Berlin’s Gay Pride parade).

I also had the chance to collaborate on a long term strategy for diversity. This included establishing a full time role (Sr. Diversity & Inclusion Officer) — the first of its kind at Zalando. I moved into that role in September of 2018. I’m working with amazingly talented and dedicated colleagues who have a passion to make change happen. I am very optimistic for 2019. And I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to take on this challenge.
