A New Blue Marble

The “Blue Marble” is lovely, but as David Twiddy pointed out, the first whole-earth image is quite a bit earlier. The US Air Force DODGE satellite, launched in 1967, appears to have taken the first such photo, a color composite even. NASA’s ATS-3 took the whole-earth image, also in 1967, that appeared on the Whole Earth Catalog cover. The famous “Blue Marble” in 1972 was the first taken by a manned satellite.
