What are you hesitating over right now?

Listen to the Podcast>>> What are you hesitating over right now?

In case you don’t know this about me, I’m a little bit woo-woo. I love to embrace my spiritual side and all of the wonderful and magical things that entails. One of the ways I do this is to draw a daily tarot card and pick a couple of keywords from the cards meaning, to use as journaling prompts. I do this to highlight areas in my life and business which may need my attention, but I’ve maybe been a bit too busy to notice. Moreover, the journaling is kinda like having a therapy session with myself.

(Now if this isn’t your thing, hang in here with me for a moment as I will very soon come to my point).

Keyword journaling for clarity

This week, one of the keywords from a card draw was ‘hesitancy’. Hmm, great word to describe a productivity problem huh?

Let’s make sure we’re totally clear about what hesitancy really means before we go on:

Rather than hesitancy just being a delay in starting something (which is the ‘off the top of my head’ meaning for the word), it’s much more than that. It’s about being uncertain, it’s about having doubts or second thoughts and it’s even being nervous or unsure about something.

Back to the journaling!

The first thing I wrote down in my journal was ‘what am I hesitating over right now? Great prompt question!

I started by writing down a couple of the usual things such as:

  • hesitating to start the fitness plan I’d been talking about since the beginning of the year
  • and the sugar detox I’ve gone on about for almost as long
  • and don’t get me started on the plan to stop drinking coffee because right now, that ain’t happening!

So those were my immediate thoughts. It was now time to dig a little deeper. I started to write again.

I’m hesitating over:

  • Re-releasing an existing programme
  • Getting a new programme ready for release
  • Opening my productivity club
  • Being more visible with video
  • Doing monthly webinars

There’s actually many more items to the list, but this gives you an idea of the things going on with me and my business right now. All of these things are just swimming around in a kind of limbo with no real commitments being made to them.

And do you know what the common factor is for why they stay in this state week after week and month after month?

If I add a little extra to each of the things I’m hesitating over you will see what I mean.

I’m hesitating over:

Re-releasing an existing programme — in case no one buys it

Getting a new programme ready for release — in case no one buys it

Opening my productivity club — in case no one joins

Being more visible with video — in case no one watches

Doing monthly webinars — in case no one watches

Wow! I’m surprised I get anything done with all that going on!

But do you know what? This is totally normal. This is how every business owner feels when they put themselves out there or attempts something new. And it’s ok to feel like this for a little while. The important step is to get past it, and move forward.

The problem with fear is that it manifests in blocks. Great big Berlin Wall sized blocks making any movement forward of these tasks, projects, ideas, goals, hopes and dreams difficult to do.

We tell ourselves:

  • It’s not the right time
  • I’ve got more important things on right now
  • I need to do more research
  • I need a bigger list, more engaged audience or more Facebook followers
  • I should wait until I’ve been established longer, redecorated the office or come back from holiday

Addressing the Issues

The act of journaling about this topic means I’ve started to write about the issues I’m having right now. And in all honesty, on paper, it does look a little crazy. The level of hesitancy in my business and life right now didn’t register on my radar as an issue until I was prompted to write about the word ‘hesitancy’.

Now, please don’t get me wrong as things aren’t quite as bad as they seem. I’m not sat in the office twiddling my thumbs. I’m busy making money and running my business. However, from time to time the ‘running’ of my business becomes a full time job and my focus on ‘growing and developing’ my business takes a back seat until I recognise the fact.

The thing with running your own business, and being the sole person responsible for E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G is that we turn the task of keeping things ticking over into our full-time job.

  • Ticking over doesn’t necessarily pay the bills.
  • Ticking over doesn’t hit my income goals.
  • Ticking over doesn’t help me work on my plans for growth.

And with such busy businesses, we wear many hats throughout the day so it’s important to remember to step back and take a look at the bigger picture once in a while.

Highlighting the issues

Thankfully my habit of using journaling prompts has highlighted something I would not have noticed was wrong otherwise.

When you’re in your business each and every day it’s very hard to look at it.

So this discussion is your prompt to take a moment and think about where you’re hesitating right now, You can do this for both business and life as acknowledging and fixing one can sometimes help to fix the other.

How do you get started?

Take out a pen and paper and start with writing the words: What am I hesitating over right now’? and get writing. See what comes up and start to address the issues you face. Don’t use this as an exercise to beat yourself up with. This is a learning tool, and by doing this you’re recognising where you might be stuck right now much sooner than you may have usually done, and that’s brilliant.

Staying aware of what’s going on

As I mentioned at the start, my tarot card draw helped highlight a need in my business. But this isn’t my only method I use to make sure I am aware of the bigger picture. I have a business coach, and we meet once a month. My sessions with the wonderful Emma Holmes from Coaching Rockstars challenges what I am doing to move things forward and gives me a shake when things have gotten stale. I also have a monthly tarot card reading with the wonderful Andrea Lancaster, The White Witch, and this is my spiritual kick up the bum. So overall I’ve got the bases covered. If I’ve missed something such as a current hesitancy issue one of these sources of support will find it. Nothing goes unchallenged for long, and I remain fresh, alert and ready to grow, develop and succeed.

What do you have in place to make sure you don’t miss what’s really going on?

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the time or money for a business coach, or if monthly tarot card readings are not your thing. There are plenty of other ways you can do this. I know a lot of business owners, including myself who benefit from Facebook groups filled with like-minded business owners. And if this is something you would be interested in, then I’ve got a free group which you’re welcome to come along and join by clicking the button below.

Have a wonderful day and I look forward to seeing you in the group very soon.
