30 Days off Sugar and Meat — The Results Were Unexpected

I did it to break bad habits but there were surprising benefits

On a recent holiday to Kyrgyzstan (you can read about it here) a guy I met had given up meat and enthusiastically shared the benefits he experienced. Then I listened to a Rich Roll podcast with Mike Fremont, who at the age of 100 is still running. He moved to a plant-based diet 30 years ago after a colon cancer diagnosis and has thrived as a result of the change in diet.

It felt like subtle hints that it was time to make a change. I was very aware of my sugar intake. Not out of control, but more than I’d like, or is good for me. The problem is I love it, I reward myself with food, I emotionally eat and a salad doesn’t cut it. I’m also becoming increasingly mindful of the environmental impacts of animal farming.

I made a call that the Monday after my return from holiday I would do 30 days off sugar and meat. Fruit would be allowed, as would fish. I still had WPI protein powder which was low carb, other than that, it was all fresh food.

No alcohol, but that’s nothing new — I’ve been off alcohol for nearly ten years.

Physically I’m in good shape — I kayak, swim and go to the gym. I do however have osteoarthritis in my right hip. On a good day I’m…
