Interactive map: who’s having the most sex to get pregnant?
Charting the frequency of sex based on 4.4 million data points
Ever wondered how often people have sex when they’re trying to get pregnant? We made an interactive map at Ovuline showing the frequency of sexual intercourse when trying to conceive in each US state. See the interactive map here, or check out the static map below:

Our data map shows the following insights about sex when trying to conceive:
- People have sex an average of 6.10 days per month (73.2 times per year)
- People have the most sex in Idaho (7 days per month)
- People have the least sex in Washington, DC (4.62 days per month)
- The Northwest region is the most sexually-active area in the US
The top 5 states having the most sex (highest to lowest):
- Idaho, 7 days
- Vermont: 6.94 days
- Nebraska, 6.92 days
- Wyoming, 6.9 days
- Iowa: 6.83 days
The bottom 5 states (lowest to highest):
- Washington DC, 4.62 days
- Mississippi, 5.27 days
- New York, 5.53 days
- Kentucky, 5.62 days
- Delaware, 5.7 days

The chart is based on 4.35 million instances of sex and tens of millions of data points from hundreds of thousands of Ovia users across the US. Ovia users track their information daily—including menstrual periods, moods, cervical fluid, and sexual intercourse—to see when they’re most fertile. Because most women can only get pregnant during five to six days of the month (the “fertile window”) and have just a 20 percent chance of conceiving even on their most fertile day, timing intercourse is important.
With our data, we’re answering longstanding questions around what’s normal when trying to get pregnant. How much sex is typical? Does where a person live affect how much sex they have? And our insights confirm what many people always suspected: Washington, D.C. is the least sexy place in America. Just kidding, DC.
Our majority-female team built Ovia Fertility to combine fertility algorithms, machine learning, and clinical guidelines with user-reported information to predict ovulation. Users can import their activities from wearable health devices, including Fitbit, Jawbone, and Withings. Over 70,000 Ovia users have reported successful pregnancies in the app and conceive up to three times faster than the US national average. The app has reached the number one spot in the Apple App Store’s medical category.
