Critical Making Blog Post # 5
I created concept mood boards for each barbie and candy. I used the information from Sugarfina and Barbie’s websites as well as research on famous women from each career path. I also tried to make the year the barbie was released come through. These allowed me to create possible asset lists and brainstorm potential backgrounds for the “rooms.” The flavor profile from each candy also is something I want to emphasize, so you will see them throughout the concept boards.
Original 1959 Barbie
Mood Board:
For Original Barbie, my concept is a retro, classic beach with a girly twist. I took a lot of inspiration from the Museum of Ice Cream and the female icons of the 1950’s, including the founder of Barbie, Ruth Handler.

1965 Astronaut Barbie
Mood Board:
My concept for astronaut barbie celebrates women who have gone to space as well as the excitement surrounding space exploration in the 60’s.

1975 Athlete Barbie
Mood Board:
The room for Athlete Barbie will celebrate several sports as well as the Olympics and the female athletes who compete in them. The barbie choses was gymnast, so there will be a focus on gymnastics, but also exploration of sports like soccer, basketball and boxing.

1995 Firefighter Barbie
Firefighter barbie was very interesting research wise. There are some amazing women int he field. One important note is that although the illustration for Firefighter Barbie is African American, I could not find an image of the actual African American doll anywhere online. I found a few of her in the box, but none of the barbie on her own. This was very disappointing to see.
Mood Board:
Firefighter Barbie will be near a firetruck or fire department and feature a Dalmatian to go along with her. I toyed with the idea of having Barbie putting out a fire, with some sort of flame effect going on, but wasn’t sure if that would be too intense, especially for children.

2011 News Anchor Barbie
Mood Board:
When researching for News anchor barbie I found several awesome articles about women in media. I think it would be cool to either do barbie in her news room or covering a live story, depending on what assets I can find.

2019 Pilot Barbie
Mood Board:
This is probably my favorite concept. Female pilots are hard to come by, and I love that Barbie is encouraging young girls to pursue this career. I imagine a pink plane and blue, cloudy sky for this room.

My next steps are to start looking for and building these assets, building the characters and searching for 3-D images to use as backgrounds. I have already started modeling the candy and am excited to start downloading assets and playing around.
