Don’t Put That There!
Do you file important stuff in the Mystical Library of Lost Things (yes it is a real place, found right next to the Odd Socks Depository)?
You have something in your hand- a document or a book maybe, whatever it is — and you don’t need it right now, but you will want to refer to it later.
Do you just find a space to dump it with no organisation (yes I am talking to you!)?
And do you make a mental note of where it is but deep down inside you know it will never be seen again?
Well, stop it!
Searching for misplaced and lost items can be a massive drain on your time. And it’s even worse if it’s something you need to get your hands on right that second.
Next time you are about to store something in the Library of Lost Things just take a moment and think ‘where should I really be putting this so I can find it again?’ then take that moment to put it there instead. This takes the same amount of time as it would to find a space to dump it, so no excuses.
I understand that out of habit you may have created an organisational barrier, that lies to you and tells you it is too much trouble to file something properly or put it away somewhere you will be able to find it again. You don’t have time for that, right? Wrong! What you don’t have time for is tearing your office apart next time you urgently need something! We’ve all done it and it’s not fun.
So let’s work together and make it easy to find something another day. I want you to hear my voice in your head next time you are about to choose to lose something you will need again. I want you to hear the words ‘now, where should you really be putting that?’

You can do this; I know you can.
Start small and the rest will follow.
