I always thought simple observation was better than the user study interview. An interview afterward is fine, but just observe closely first. You can tell much more about what’s working and what’s not, what’s delightful and what’s frustrating. With interviews, I’ve seen users literally unable to use something, then go on to describe their experience as “intuitive.”
