Acrylic Pouring Techniques

Dutch Pour

Here’s a fun technique for you guys — it’s called a Dutch Pour, and it’s basically a way to make beautiful and intuitive art by just manipulating air.

Dutch Pour is definitely one of my favorite techniques. I like how the colors sit next to each other and form a beautiful harmony, almost like music. The air from the blow dryer mixes it for you, making it a really relaxing process full of surprises.

Alright, enough talking…let’s get to making some art.

Get your studio area ready by just laying your canvas flat. Have your paints and a few spoons right next to it.

Start with the white paint with Floetrol. Add a few drops of silicone and water to the mixture. Spread it around some of the canvas. You can start to see the consistency that you’ll be working with.

Pour three different acrylic colors on top of the white paint. As you can see, I’m doing mine in a loose X shape, but you can do your own thing. Essentially, you should add the colored paint on top of white paint so it mixes well.

The great thing about Dutch pour is that the method embraces imperfections, so just enjoy the process.

So, right now, you should have white paint with colored stripes on top. Using the blow dryer, hover over the canvas. Tilt the blow drier in different directions to experiment with how the paint can move.

In the blank space of the canvas, add more white — use a spoon if you need to even it out. On top of the white, continue to add streaks of color. Just keep repeating the process until you’ve filled the whole canvas.

Take out the blow drier again and maneuver the paint so that it mixes and marbles. If you want, continue to add small amounts of paint in specific places until you’re happy with how it looks.

There you go — a perfect yet unique Dutch pour!
