Daily Thoughts When I Work From Home in Southern California July-October
2:28pm: I knew I should’ve opened the windows sooner last night…oh well, just gonna tough it out today.
3:52pm: Sun sets in only…four hours. That’s only one-and-a-half Hamiltons! Okay, including deleted songs, but I got this.
4:45pm: Look at the positive side — it’s still 8 degrees cooler in here than outside!
4:47pm: Begins checking weather every six minutes to see if it’s still hotter outside than in.
5:36pm: That’s it — cold shower work break.
5:51pm: Chants to self “Two hours til sunset! Two hours til sunset!”
6:23pm: MORE sweat stains? That’s the third shirt today!
6:44pm: Is it possible to be slowly baked alive? What’s the minimum temperature for a slow bake?
7:03pm: Do tears cool you off the same way sweat does?
7:18pm: It’s probably not the worst idea to have a living will./I need to update my living will. Pulls out loose-leaf paper titled “Will” from few days prior, makes edits.
7:39pm: I understand this is direct karma for my existing carbon footprint but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JUST SET SUN!
7:55pm: Dances around like Julie Andrews on a hillside, opening every window and turning on the attic fan.
8:16pm: Starting tomorrow I am DONE being cheap — I’m turning on the A/C and basking in the glory of modern utility systems (despite living in a decades-old frame with poor insulation design).
Repeat.
Every 3rd week of the month: Still get $200–$300 electric bill.
**Remember to move up all times by one hour each month approaching winter solstice.
