Hi Hsu,

Thank you for your note and good wishes (Yes, indeed things are better now). That sounds like an incredibly difficult situation to walk through. I am sorry your family went through that. Is your mother in law okay now?

I am not familiar with Dr. Peterson, I’m afraid. What is his first name or the name of his ministry?

With faith, I think a hurdle a lot of people have is that they think it is completely blind, like believing in Santa Claus. But actually, it’s more like believing that your great-grandfather existed. Based on family stories, you know you must have had a great-grandfather, even if you never met him. You trust the stories of your family and the knowledge that everyone has two great-grandfathers.

There is an element of trusting beyond understanding, but faith isn’t really blind. There have been scientists, philosophers, and men and women far smarter than me who have investigated the way the world works and drawn the conclusion that God is indeed real.

One thing that helped me a lot was reading what those smart men/women wrote and seeing why they believe as they do, why they are certain that the foundation for faith is solid. If you like to read, I recommend the books on this list — they cover things like morality, philosophy, biology, astronomy, emotions/reason, and many of them are really easy to read :)
