I’m sure you knew this post would resonate with me, Karthik Rajan, since we met on LinkedIn, and our first phone conversation changed the direction and purpose of my life’s work.

I think what you are relating here is not just because of your activity on LinkedIn, it’s because of your INTENTIONAL activity on LinkedIn — to give, to share, to learn, to connect. You and I have always shared this intent in our interactions on any platform and in person. This is why I care so deeply about personal requests to connect, the effort to explain the purpose of the connection, just like the reason you connected with the bicycle rider for the purposed of asking directions.

If you had just randomly stopped to say hi, or worse, to sell him something, the relationship would have been totally different. It’s the act of having a specific need, recognizing someone willing and able to help, and valuing and appreciating that help.
