In many cultures there is a mythic tradition known as the ‘wounded healer’. This term may have first been coined by Carl Jung in describing his own journey of healing and integration, but the myth of the wounded healer.
In a multitude of texts including the Bible, Norse and Greek myth, Hebrew lore, and many of the Eastern traditions, there is a tradition of a figure who having wrestled with their own vulnerability in some way then becomes a healer and guide for others.
Indeed this process of inner initiation is the mainstay of some of the oldest forms of wisdom on our planet: the path of shamanism. In the shamanic traditions, the apprentice shaman must take a series of initiatory journeys into the underworld of the unconscious. The initiate will come into direct contact with the personification of their fears and their deepest wound in at times extreme persecution and rejection. Having absorbed, embraced, and transformed their fears of their wound, the apprentice emerges and in time becomes the shaman — the wounded healer.
This is the journey that we choose, this is the power of the sacred wound as a teacher, we all have a wound pattern, it’s the mission to claim it — not to deny but to own it and transform its power or alchemize the shadow into gold.
This comes from choosing to go into the shadow, the disavowed parts or our psyche and in claiming our humanity we show that it can be done, and when another see’s — they either begin their own journey or reject and repress their shadow’s guidance.
You need never behave as though you are a victim of your wound. It is vital to remember that the deep pain you may feel is not a personal pain but the pain and denial of your humanity. If a sensation arises — it has a purpose.
We each come into the world with a karmic genetic inheritance. Running beneath the personal trials and themes of our life is a deeper programme wherein we are called upon to transmute aspects of the collective karma of humanity.
In order for humankind to awaken to its true higher nature, we must first unlock these codes and transform them in our personal lives.
It’s really the point where we begin to meet life and interact with it creatively, in response rather than rejection of our one wild and precious life.
Now, this is all well and good, but what about overwhelm? Collapse? This my dear reader is where we need each other. What is so remarkable to me about the human nervous system is that we can resource ourselves and repattern our imprinting (trauma) when in coherence with a healthier system. We can also trigger wounding patterns this way if we are not discerning — so as my high school vise principal told me ; “show me your friends, and I’ll show you your life”.
Somatic practitioners specialize in this therapeutic modality and if you are a practitioner of healing — you more than anyone need to focus on why you are drawn to the profession. We are all wounded — what we do with it, is what is revealing and healing.
