Throughout 2020, I saw many posts and tweets from creative people who shared how they were struggling. Though they make their living writing or painting or designing, they felt empty. They didn’t have anything left to share with their audience. I felt for them but couldn’t relate to them. For some reason, even in the middle of the pandemic and lockdowns, I didn’t experience a decrease in my writing output. In fact, I wrote more in 2020 than I did in 2019.
For some reason, I didn’t struggle like I thought I was going to.
My creative streak lasted until…
I didn’t expect this show to still be so relevant.
I usually watch a few shows at once. I typically will watch one dark or dramatic show and one comedy show, just for balance. After finishing The Great, I was left without a new comedy to watch. Somehow, I stumbled upon Veep.
This show, which ran from 2012–2019, is pretty hilarious at times. It follows Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her senior staff as they navigate through the difficulties of politics.
This show is littered with profanity that took me aback at first, but then I grew accustomed to it…
Someone may have cared a lot, but I didn’t.
I Care a Lot is a new Netflix film that takes us into the crooked practices of legal guardianship. Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) has built a thriving business on legally swindling elderly people out of their money. She is a ruthless businesswoman who longs to be rich. She is determined to get what she wants, no matter the cost. She’s brilliant, ruthless, and good at what she does.
I think this film expects that we will root for Marla Grayson. The problem is that I didn’t. I wanted to like her…
And that makes each scene even more interesting.
Promising Young Woman, written and directed by Emerald Fennell, is about Cassie (Carey Mulligan), a young woman on a mission to teach “nice guys” a lesson. This film is about consent, trauma, and how our society treats both men and women. It’s a controversial film and a great conversation starter.
I wondered if this would be worth nearly $20 to rent on Amazon Prime, and I must say that it’s worth every penny.
I think they tried to do too much.
Since the Golden Globes released their nominations, I have been slowly making my way through the various series. So far, it’s been a mixed bag: The Undoing was completely deserving, while Emily in Paris was a complete waste of my time.
This led me to the Netflix series Ratched, which accumulated 3 Golden Globe nominations. Sarah Paulson is a tremendous actress, so I was quite excited for what I thought would be an exciting and twisted tale about the infamous villain, Mildred Ratched.
But instead, it’s pretty boring and handles history very…
To my surprise, a child actor stole the show.
The Dig takes us into the world of archeology in the 1930s. Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) is a talented excavator who is disregarded by the elite in the field. He is hired by Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) to dig up some large burial mounds on her property. When some important finds are discovered, there’s a fight over which museum should take the artifacts and who should get credit. Oh yeah, they’re also gearing up for a World War.
This film is gorgeous. Seriously, the cinematography is excellent. There were so many…
Your mileage may vary.
I was heartbroken when I heard the news of John Lewis's death last year. I remember being so devastated that this icon of the civil rights movement and influential legislator had passed away. He was the moral compass in Congress and his death was incredibly significant.
John Lewis: Good Trouble takes us into his life and over sixty years of his working for the rights of all people. And there’s so much of his story that I just didn’t know. While I loved this film, I know there will be plenty of people who won’t enjoy…
Sylvie’s Love, written and directed by Eugene Ashe, was an unexpected delight. I don’t typically like romance films, so I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. If you’re a fan of the romance genre, this could be a great film for you to check out.
The story centers around Sylvie (Tessa Thompson), a driven young woman who falls for a talented musician named Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha). It’s a dreamy romance and the music is phenomenal. I was blown away by the film’s incredible style! …
Covert racism is also a problem.
Antebellum opens with a gorgeous, indulgent shot of a plantation. We are dropped into the middle of the Civil War with all of its atrocities. It’s a beautiful and engaging way to open the film. While watching, I wondered how a movie that starts so well could get such largely negative reviews.
While the cinematography, costuming, and music were all phenomenal in this film, the writing fell short.
It’s a shame because the concept of Antebellum is fascinating. I am enjoying this brand of horror film that doesn’t involve any ghosts or paranormal activity…
Reading subtitles isn’t that hard.
Lupin is a new Netflix series about a man seeking to right a wrong from his past. He is an incredible grifter who has been inspired by the adventures of Arsène Lupin, known as a “gentleman thief.” It is a French show so they, of course, speak French, which required me to read the English subtitles.
Honestly, needing to read subtitles made me delay watching this particular show. I couldn’t just lazily listen to it; I had to have my eyes on it the entire time. …
