Getting Paid to Be Yourself?
What if I told you that you could get paid and make a career out of filming your normal everyday life? Well, that’s becoming a reality.
There is a whole culture now of people that have the capability to gain a large following through social media and turn it into a career. The biggest example of this is the community of “Youtubers”. These are people that produce content on youtube, typically on a daily or weekly basis. These videos can range from vlogging (video blogging) their day to day life, filming funny skits or challenges, tutorials, or anything else that they think people would enjoy watching. After some time they start to gain an audience of subscribers, eager to keep up to date with their life. It starts as a creative outlet but suddenly becomes so much more.
People often wonder how “youtubers” make money if all they do is film videos at home and put them online. Some of the simpler ways are to have ads that stream before your video which can bring in a small portion of income. However, the more successful way is through something similar to the concept of product placement. Brands see that these people have a large following and want to use that to their advantage. Companies will contact these content creators asking them to talk about a certain product in their video, and this works surprisingly well. These people are often idolized and looked up to so much that their opinion truly matters to their viewers. So, for example, if they talk about a product they are loving, their subscribers will grow interested and want to check it out for themselves.
Audible.com (the leading provider of audiobooks) is a popular example of a brand deal. They pay youtubers to talk about their website, and even give the viewers a special offer as incentive to check it out. For example, they may say you get your first book free if you use a certain link or promo code (often associated with the youtubers name). This specific company is one that has reached out to a large number of youtubers and if you’re an avid watcher, you begin to notice.
GOING ON TOUR
It is becoming increasingly popular for youtubers to go on tour, which is a very hard concept for most people to grasp. Unless you can sing or dance, it’s hard to imagine what one of these youtubers would go up on stage and do. How do they entertain thousands of people? Believe it or not, often times they go up on stage, say hi, maybe crack a joke or two, and the crowd goes crazy. It’s unreal to think that these people are becoming famous just for being themselves. It’s actually a really cool concept and something that has not been explored in the past. Viewers have the opportunity to get to know these people so well because they broadcast so much of their life. Youtubers often treat their viewers as their friends, talking to them on twitter and other platforms, creating an intimate and real bond with their audience. So, to just get to see these people in person is enough for someone to buy a ticket to one of these shows.
Aside from tours, there are now whole conventions dedicated to online personalities. Vidcon is the most well known convention. It takes place once a year at the Anaheim Convention Center. It is basically an opportunity for these creators to meet their viewers and talk about what they love to do. There are meet and greets, concerts, panels, interviews and more.
It’s such an interesting concept — people look up to them so much because they can see that they are just normal people, like anyone else. It’s very comforting to hear someone online talking about the same struggles you’ve been through, or just being a source of laughter. It’s all about being relatable and open minded, and not being afraid to be yourself. The youtube community is just made up of a bunch of creative minds wanting to share and connect with others.
