A Lesson in Humbling Yourself

I use to be so cocky.

I use to brag at how great I was at just writing on a whim and coming up with great ideas without creating outlines.

As an aspiring writer in my youth, I use to blow off the outline portion of the writing process and cram my way through essays, stories, and poems. I got by on this method for awhile. That is until I needed to do it professionally.

Now, as I dive into recreating my professional career after 4 years of building my family, I have humbled myself and embraced the necessity of outlines. Brainstorming, detailed outlines, and countless rounds of editing and rewriting are normal, necessary, and arguably unavoidable.

The moral of my story here is:

Do not be cocky. Don’t let your passion and raw talent in any subject hinder your ability to grow and reach your potential. No one is immune to process. Plan and ask questions of those who are industry leaders. The more meaningful questions you ask, the stronger and more valuable your talent will become.
