Honestly curious: how does this change if you are in a wheelchair? Do you have to be extra assertive to fall into the middle category? Would the chair automatically put you into the “don’t be a nuisance” trap? Or would it help to humanize you as there is a definite social stigma against public violence towards those in wheelchairs?

Does one’s gender effect these rules? Age? Race?

It would be interesting to see a comparison on what to do in this situation if you fit different descriptions.
