I feel like people criticizing that miss the point of her statement. She wasn’t going into an in depth analysis of the building practices involved in the creation of the original White House. I got the impression that she mentioned black slaves building the White House to contrast with herself and her family who are also black now living in that house as the leaders of the country. It was a message about how far we have come in regards to race relations, especially as it is possible that her ancestors were slaves. Saying that slaves-and a bunch of other people too- doesn’t convey the same message because it includes superfluous information. If she had said ONLY slaves built the White House, I could understand the irritation but she didn’t.
