An important discussion Kelly Moran. From my perspective we are not creative or ethical, we are human. My fundamental bias is that creativity is innate. It is our first language, our mother tongue; a sensory nonverbal form of communication and expression of our thoughts. As my response, please allow me to reproduce an excerpt of a blog I wrote about responsibility. Thanks.

Every action we take has an impact and influence on others and the world around us. Everything we create has the potential of being the “good stuff” or not. As responsible leaders we have to be conscious of the whole process of creation from thought to action and ensure accountability throughout this process.

The Creator

“I think you have a responsibility to do really good stuff and get it out there for people to use and let them build on the shoulders of it and keep making it better stuff.” — Steve Jobs.

Every action we take has an impact and influence on others and the world around us. Everything we create has the potential of being the “good stuff” or not. As responsible leaders we have to be conscious of the whole process of creation from thought to action and ensure accountability throughout this process.

The Destroyer

“We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity.” — Stephen Hawking

The act of creating does not exist in isolation of the potential of destroying. Once we are engaged in the process of creating, anything we create is vulnerable to being destroyed or being destructive. We can actually create the destruction. Intention plays a huge role in this instance. If we are not motivated by “greed and stupidity” we have the potential to prevent the destructive side.

The One Who Repairs

“It is more honorable to repair a wrong than to persist in it” — Thomas Jefferson

As we are engaged with good intention in creating, we can take a wrong turn. In spite of this, things are still in our control. It is up to us, as responsible leaders, to identify the “wrong” and proceed to repair, rather to “persist” in taking the same path.
