Here in this post, I’ll mainly focus on my programming experience rather than the game and how and why we formed Awakened Games. To make the context clear, I’ll briefly talk about them.
I happened to be in a position (Design Fundamentals Class homework project) to create a game for the Baby Boomers market. I was taking a Python class at the time. The Python teacher was a mathematician and computer scientist, and as for class exercise he introduced “magic square”.
During a journey forming the game idea, hit the wall many times and overcame by pieces from many different games I played. I grew up playing Russian card games with my grandfather. Also played 10*10 checkers AKA International Draught in my teenage years. I didn’t even realize that I liked games.
I met with Patrick at SF Awakened Mind — Sangha (Buddhist Community). Basically, we are sangha mates. We worked in karma yoga project for developing Yantra Meditation App together. I had a designer role, and he was a developer. At one of the Dharma talks’ break, Patrick and I were chatting, and I mentioned that I create a math and strategy game. He showed a keen interest and was saying that he would play it with his daughter.
A few days later, I messaged him and asked if he would share 20–30 min of his time so that I can explain how the game works. We had a video call, and I asked him to grab a pen and paper and described pieces and rules of the game. He agreed to invest 2 hours a day developing this game; even better, he said he will teach me programming! Later, Patrick asked if we can add one more person for this project, I agreed, and Natalie joined us.
We have been pair programming, practicing test-driven development and extreme programming for 2 hours a day, 7–9 AM at first, and 6–8 AM nowadays. We are developing using React Framework. It is really happening!!! and it’s going to go further, and further.
We use gitLab, VS Code, React, Jest, Enzyme, Lint, etc. Expect, render, objects, methods, states, components, binds, — it’s been over 80 hours now. I am determined to go beyond my imagination. Feeling grateful and fortunate have a fantastic mentor and partners.
Inspired by both Patrick and Natalie’s characters and commitment, the light of my spirit is driving towards this vision. We have come far further than I expected a month ago. We are planning the release of the game in Q3 2019. Stay tuned.
