Thanks Allan, I’m glad you liked the post, and that you are conducting contextual inquiry in enterprise . We like to break the studies up into parts, from more broad to more specific focus areas as we learn where to narrow instead of trying to plan the whole test program up front. With enterprise I find it is key to be with end users frequently, to observe people using our products as well as their work arounds and hacks to be more efficient — how they work on the fringes of our product. That’s where we often find our key insights. For sample size — I think 15–20 respondents is sufficient for initial rounds of field studies.
